My paintings reflect the things I find most interesting and most lovely. Painting has opened up new ways to see for me. I am primarily a studio painter. My camera is a constant companion which I use to seek out resources from which to plan my paintings. I find myself fascinated by details as well as the grand view. My early work in fiber and later work in graphic design are now reflected in my paintings. I look for texture and mood in my subjects. I use my computer design skills to work out designs for my paintings, scanning a preliminary design into my computer, arranging the elements, and checking the contrast possibilities for my paintings before starting the actual painting. I look for the effects of light, shadow, reflections. I enjoy exploring the possibilities of new techniques and materials. I love the adventure of watermedia painting.
My first career was as a mathematician in a local electronics firm. I was not happy as a mathematician. After leaving the electronics world, I began my art career as a fiber artist. I spun and dyed yarns and created stitched art and sculpture. I studied design in local colleges and went on to teach design in adult education classes and fiber art in a summer program at Stanford University. In the early 80s I combined my math and design talents and became a graphic designer. I retired in 2005 to devote my time to painting.
